The Savonlinna region has seen many wars. The small town, which today has a population of 36,000, has long been a hotly contested strategic interest between the Kingdom of Sweden and Russia. The construction by the Swedes in the 15thcentury of the famous Olavinlinna fortress, one of Finland's most important monuments, bears witness to this. In 1856, the construction of the Saimaa canal to the Baltic strengthened the city's pre-eminence. It became the hub of regional trade. After an interruption in traffic due to the tense local historical context with the Soviet Union, traffic was re-established in 1968.
