Ylämaa is a small village of 1,400 inhabitants, some 35 km south of the town of Lappeenranta. It's best known for a semi-precious stone found only in Finland: spectrolite. If you're interested in the subject, or just curious, pay a visit to the museum. You'll find a collection of polished and natural gemstones, minerals and fossils; a goldsmith's workshop; and a collection of fluorescent stones. Several stores and cutters. The tourist information office, located inside the museum, is also very helpful for visits and walks in the surrounding area. Info: ylamaanjalokivimuseo.fi/en
