Capital of the Eastern Finland region, Mikkeli has a population of 53,000 as of July 31, 2020. Situated in the heart of the lake district, between the Saimaa and Puulajärvi rivers, this attractive merchant town has preserved traces of its past as a garrison town. In the late 17th century, Mikkeli became the center of military administration in Eastern Finland. In 1775, the army established a permanent garrison here. The town center was laid out in a neat square plan. During the Second World War, Mikkeli became the headquarters of the famous Marshal Mannerheim.
