Parikkala is a small municipality on the Russian border, with around 4,687 inhabitants in 2020, which is particularly interesting for its lakeside location. Lake Siikalahti, also known as "Bird Lake", is a protected site where rare species, migratory birds and songbirds such as the nightingale nest. The area around the lake is home to other animals such as coypu, mink and badger. Guided excursions are organized on request, and independent visitors can obtain information at the park's information point (www.visitparikkala.fi). A guide is on hand all summer.
