Varkaus (21,441 inhabitants) is one of the key towns in the local industrial development. The Mechanical Music Museum has a collection of 170 instruments. You can also visit the Canal Museum, which describes the history of the construction of the canal 170 years ago and its traffic to northern Savonia. From Varkaus, roads 23 and 13, leading to Joensuu, pass within a few kilometres of the New Valamo Orthodox Monastery, which is steeped in Karelian Orthodox mystery. The town is located on the shores of Lake Saimaa and offers excellent fishing, sailing and boating opportunities. You can also discover its river routes and canals.
