Today, it's Eastern Finland's main town on the shores of Lake Kallavesi. Its superb museum of Orthodox religious art, picturesque market, winter activities, panoramic tower and nightlife make it well worth a visit. The town has laid out vast parks with beautiful rowan and birch avenues, while the wide streets were once used to fight fires. An important junction in the Saimaa lake trade, steamers leave the port of Kuopio for Savonlinna or the Orthodox monasteries of New Valamo and Lintula in Heinävesi.
