The village of Heinävesi, population 3,500, is best known for its two Orthodox monasteries: Valamo Monastery and Lintula Convent. Many of these monasteries were destroyed by the Winter War in November 1939. The town is also home to numerous locks, now part of the Finnish national landscape. To reach this small town in Eastern Finland, there are several means of transport available:Bus: numerous buses from Kuopio and Varkaus.Boat: cruise departing from Kuopio or Savonlinna, with stopovers to visit the two monasteries.Train: please note that the station is several kilometers south of the village.
