From Parikkala, pretty Route 14 forks off towards one of the country's most grandiose sites, Punkaharju, a fine example of a moraine ridge. This narrow, 7 km-long formation crosses the center of the lake, narrowing at times to allow only the road to pass through. The ridge overlooks magnificent stretches of water, a fabulous landscape of pine and birch forests whose shades of green blend with the blues of the two lakes that the ridge separates. There are parking areas along the road where you can stop and take a dip in the lake. If the weather's cooperating, picnics by the lake are a real treat!
