A short trip to Piñones is worth the detour to delve into the heart of Puerto Rico's African roots. During the colonial period, the area was long dedicated to the cultivation of sugar cane, harvested by African slaves, mostly Yorubas. Many of the residents of Piñones today are direct descendants of these men. The atmosphere of Piñones is in stark contrast to the individualistic and modern atmosphere of the residential areas of San Juan. On the other hand, there is a good chance that on the beaches of Piñones, disappointment will prevail in front of the concrete blocks. You have to be mobile and go to the east of the city to see the most beautiful spots in the area. Kilometers of a wild beach lined with coconut trees, which fills up in places, especially in summer and on weekends, but leaves room for portions empty of people. For the closest, La Pocita and Vacía Talega, are already two isolated beaches where you can swim quietly and bask in the sun.
