Located in the central mountain range, the Cordilla Central is north of Yauco and west of Ponce. The city of Adjuntas has various names, the most common being "the city of the sleeping giant"(ciudad del gigante dormido), due to the formation of a mountain in its name. It nestles at the foot of Pico Guilarte or Monte del Guaraguao, the fifth highest peak in Puerto Rico with an altitude of 1,199 meters. Adjuntas is a land of lakes with numerous water sources and rivers, the most important of which is the Rio Grande, which has its source in the Juan Gonzalez neighborhood. Adjuntas is also in the heart of numerous coffee plantations and haciendas.
