Mendrisio is a town of some 15,000 inhabitants at the tip of the Swiss-Italian border, known for its neoclassical buildings, its museum and its architecture university. It's very close to Como and its eponymous lake in Italy. Villa Argentina is a former palace built by Antonio Croci for an immigrant from Ticino who became wealthy in Argentina. The famous architect Mario Botta was born here. To grasp the historical identity of the old town, there's nothing like taking an audio-guide from the tourist office and learning about the city's evolution. Today, Mendrisio is an ideal city for shopping.
