The capital of its eponymous province, Como owes its reputation to its superb lake and its traditional activity, silk manufacturing. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the lake city gained in importance during the Roman occupation, thanks to its strategic position. Politically and artistically flourishing, thanks in particular to its maestri comacini, master builders famous for spreading the Lombard architectural style throughout Italy, the city reached its apogee in the 11th century, before being destroyed by the Milanese in 1127. Rebuilt by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, Como came under permanent Milanese influence in 1355.
