Originally, the streets of this city, built on islands, were canals. After the great fires of the 1860s, the city was rebuilt in stone and the canals were covered. Only the tip of Tyholmen, around the harbor Pollen, has kept its old character. In the 19th century, Arendal was a very dynamic port, as the beautiful houses of rich shipowners still testify today. The town hall was built in 1815 in an Empire style. In addition, Arendal holds the record for the most sunny days on the south coast. In early August, regattas are held in which the fastest boats in the world participate.
