Tønsberg is Norway's oldest city. It was founded one year before the Viking king Harald unified the country in 872. 5 km north of Tønsberg lies the famous royal burial mound, where excavations have revealed a wealth of treasures. In 1904, the drakkar that served as burial ground for two Viking queens in 830 was discovered here. More recently, Sven Foyn, a native of Tønsberg, invented a deadly new weapon for whaling, the dynamite harpoon. The town is surrounded by a skjærgård of some 700 islands and islets. An ideal place for sailing, with seven marinas.
