On the border between Telemark and Sørlandet, it is the first of the tiny white towns that line the coast, all the way to Flekkefjord in the west. In the village, winding streets weave between houses with pink or black tile roofs. After the fire of 1800, the town was rebuilt with white houses no higher than two stories. The beauty of the site inspired several Norwegian painters, such as Munch and Kittelsen. As a nostalgic reminder of its past, the town has a statue of a sailor leaning on his rudder in front of the Victoria Hotel, entitled The Dream of the Sea.
