The island is only accessible by boat. Cars are forbidden, which has certainly contributed to its isolation from the outside world. In 1991, Lyngør, with its white houses on four islets in the sea, was named "Europe's best preserved village". Each arm of the sea forms a street, and it's a pleasure to stroll between the charming little houses. A leap back in time, when sailing was the only means of subsistence for the inhabitants. Most of the houses are second homes, but there are a few hundred permanent residents. There are a few restaurants, a grocery store and a sailmaker.
