Erlangen's rectangular street pattern dates back to the 17th century. Following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Margrave Christian-Ernest of Brandenburg-Bayreuth had a new town built to accommodate thousands of Huguenot refugees fleeing persecution in France. In 1886, the foundation stone of the Huguenot church was laid. This key episode in French history has left a lasting mark on the town's topography. Today, Erlangen can count on its 40,000 students to give it a young, dynamic image. As for its industrial prosperity, Erlangen owes it to the post-war establishment of Siemens-Schuckert.
