Nördlingen, with its 22,000 inhabitants, is part of the Romantische Straße, the Romantic Road between Würzburg and Füssen. A fortified town, its origins date back to the 10th century. The surrounding wall was only added in the 14th century, and the town has retained its defensive gates to this day. Even today, this ancient town in the heart of the Ries river valley has retained all its character of yesteryear, with its old half-timbered buildings, a legacy of the Middle Ages. The town is sometimes used as a location for films, such as Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
