Situated on the banks of the Wörmitz River halfway between Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Nördlingen, Dinkelsbuhl is one of the most beautiful stops on the Romantische Straße (Romantic Road between Würzburg and Füssen). Dinkelsbuhl has preserved its medieval heart and survived all the destruction. It is famous for several witch trials in the 17th century and for its surrender during the Thirty Years' War: it is said that to soften the Swedes up and dissuade them from destroying the town, the inhabitants of Dinkelsbühl sent them a delegation of children. While it's certain that the town was spared looting, the story of the children is probably the stuff of legend.
