Schwaz, a small town with a population of around 13,000, was once considered the world's largest mining metropolis because of its large silver mines. In the past, it made the Tyrol the richest region in Europe. You can stroll through the old town along the main street Franz-Josef-Strasse, which has retained its medieval character. Some beautiful wrought iron signs, patinated frescos, old houses with oriels and others painted in the Alsatian style. Every year in September, the Klangspuren Schwaz (Resonance) festival offers a series of concerts that attract renowned international composers and musicians.
