In 1822, Imst was destroyed by fire, after which the town centre was endowed with a multitude of fountains. Imst is home to the oldest expressions of Christian culture in the Tyrol, including the Romanesque figures of the prophets preserved in the oldest church in the Tyrol, between Wenns and Pitztal. In contrast to this Christian heritage, pagan customs are still alive and well. Every two years, the great Mask Carnival takes place in Imst. Nearby, on the Similaun Glacier, the 4,000-year-old hibernatus Ötzi was discovered. The surrounding area has gorges (the Ötztaler Ache) and lakes, including the Piburger See, reputed to be the warmest in Tyrol.
