Located in the heart of the Salzburg Amadeus, one of Austria's largest ski areas with 28 resorts, the village is a popular destination in summer too. Just a few kilometres from Sankt Johann im Pongau in the east and Flachau in the west, it offers numerous hiking and mountain bike trails. Josef Mohr, who wrote the lyrics to Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht(Silent Night, Holy Night), is buried in the churchyard in Kirchboden. Another poet is honoured here: Karl-Heinrich Waggerl. A rural museum - Edelweiss Alm - in an 18th-century farmhouse displays a bread oven and various old objects and tools from the region
