Since the beneficial thermal waters reach the resort below Badgastein, the development of tourism has accelerated. As a new spa resort, it has added another string to its bow. Bad Hofgastein is situated in the middle of the mountains at an altitude of 860 metres and is also popular in winter as a ski resort, offering both cross-country and downhill skiing. The Church of Our Lady, built at the end of the 15th century, has one of the most beautiful Baroque altars in the state. Also worth a visit is the charming Weitmoserschlössl, a Gothic manor house dating from 1554 which has been converted into a hotel.
