Falcade is about 50 km from Belluno, south of Monte Civetta and Alleghe. The name Falcade derives from luogo dove si sfalcia ("place where one mows"), because the only activities practised here were agriculture and livestock breeding, conditions for the survival of the inhabitants. Until the First World War, Falcade was a border area. Beyond the Valles and San Pellegrino passes, communicating with the Fiemme and Fassa valleys, the Habsburg empire began. The Austrian influence is clearly felt here, as Ladin is spoken as in the neighbouring Tyrol. However, the inhabitants of the Biois valley went to work in the two richer neighbouring valleys. It was only in the 1960s, with the arrival of the first tourists and the construction of hotels, that the inhabitants of Falcade could think of staying in their region. The first ski school was recently created; it is more exactly a college for high level sportsmen. Falcade is connected to San Pellegrino and is not far from the Alleghe lifts (20 minutes by car) on one side and Alpe de Luisa on the other (30 minutes by car). In summer, you can walk along the paths that lead to the mountain huts. We recommend that you follow the small stream northwards to the beautiful Barezze waterfall, which is squeezed between two cavities.
