Near Salzburg, Werfen is worth a visit for its beautiful and particularly well preserved thousand-year-old fortress, built by the archbishops of Salzburg between 1075 and 1078. The site is very popular with tourists because it is the starting point for one of Salzburg's most popular family attractions: the ice giants' caves. The site, on an important alpine communication axis, has been inhabited for a long time. The presence of humans is attested to as early as the 20th century. Dedicated to St. Cyriacus, the first parish church(Pfarrwerfen) is mentioned in 1074. In 1425, Werfen was granted the right to hold a market which contributed to its prosperity.
