Hallein is an industrial town to the south of Salzburg, at the foot of the mountains, in an unattractive conurbation consisting mainly of sawmills. Nevertheless, the historic town center is well worth a visit. Hallein has always been an important economic center, thanks in particular to the salt industry and a strong craft industry. Even today, craftsmen in the old town still work in the manner of their ancestors. The pedestrian zone in the town center boasts numerous cafés and tearooms, as well as excellent restaurants serving traditional cuisine. Hallien is also home to the Celtic Museum.
