This small town on the Danube west of Linz is home to a famous abbey, often cited as an example of the Rococo style. The Cistercian monastery of Wilhering, with its monastery buildings and abbey church, is a charming building on the south bank of the Danube above Linz. The monastery was originally built in Romanesque style, but over the centuries it has become a masterpiece of Rococo art. After the fire of the 11th-century monastery buildings and the church in 1733, the reconstruction by local master builder Johann Haslinger lasted until 1748. The rich interior decoration is by Martino and Bartolomeo Altomonte, and Franz Joseph Holzinger.
