The history of Bardejov can be read on its walls. This small jewel listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site has its lovely central square dominated to the north by the Saint-Egidius Basilica and in the centre by the old town hall. Bardejov has strong ties with Poland, whose border is only about ten kilometres away. The territory of Bardejov was occupied very early because of its strategic position on the trade route connecting the Black Sea with the Baltic Sea. It became an important medieval town under the patronage of the kings of Hungary. Bardejov is a small gothic jewel, especially its main square.
