In a wooded area, 15 km south of Varese, among the heather, are the ruins of an important city of the early Middle Ages. They are the remains of the capital of a county that extended to the Ticino. It was destroyed by the Visconti in 1265. Only the church of Santa Maria Foris Portas has remained intact with its 10th century frescoes, a rare testimony of the painting of that time. An area of great archaeological value classified by Unesco, which is well worth a visit. In summer, in Castelseprio, but also in Torba and Castiglione Olona, you can meet minstrels, jugglers and medieval dancers who bring back to life these period decorations.
