The glassmaking tradition in the Northern Vosges is ancient: it dates back to the end of the 15th century. Indeed, the sandstone rich in silica and the important forest cover of the region provided the glassmakers with the raw material and the firewood necessary to the exercise of their trade. In 1921, René Lalique created the Cristallerie d'Alsace. He brings his genius and the prestige of his name. Reissues of old works and contemporary creations are still produced in Wingen-sur-Moder by master glassmakers, including several best workers of France, thus perpetuating the cult of excellence. The museum is very instructive.
