In the sixteenth century it was a small fishing port dependent on Empúries, and in 1766 it obtained the title of "town". This consecrated its economic development based on fishing and the export of salted fish. Agriculture and fishing continued to be its main activities until the 1960s, when tourism developed massively. It remains a dominant activity which makes this city see its population multiply by ten during the months of July and August. Shops and construction logically complete its activity, but the anchovy salting industry is also very important.
