The first fishermen settled in l'Estartit in the 16th century, and fishing remained the port's main activity until the 1930s. It was then replaced by tourism, particularly boosted by the nearby presence of the Medes Islands, which have become a must-see when visiting l'Estartit. An ideal destination for scuba diving, this port of almost 3,000 inhabitants is also a starting point for exploring the Montgrí Natural Park, the Medes Islands and the Baix Ter, on foot or by bike, and is often a meeting place for the French, especially at weekends. From mid-July to mid-August, l'Estartit also hosts an up-and-coming jazz festival.
