L'Escala was for a long time only a small fishing port. It was in 1766 that it obtained the title of city. A promotion that consecrated its economic development based on fishing and the export of salted fish and wine. Today, tourism is the dominant activity of this town of 10,400 inhabitants, whose population increases tenfold during the months of July and August. Empúries, an ancient port located in the north of the municipality, has very beautiful ruins. Founded by Phocaean settlers around 580 B.C., the town was later occupied by the Romans, largely destroyed in the third century and then gradually abandoned.
