Before the formation of the lake, the centre of Alleghe was composed of a group of villages settled at the bottom of the valley crossed by the torrent Cordevole. On 11 January 1771, a huge landslide from Mount Spiz buried the valley floor. The colossal dam formed by the debris stopped the water from flowing into the torrent and the level of the torrent rose to create the present lake. In the 19th century, the first hotels appeared along the lake, following the development of the glorious sport of mountaineering. The excursionists of the time set out to conquer new peaks: Civetta, Pelmo, Marmolada.. Mount Civetta (3,320 metres) is one of the most famous mountains in the Dolomites, where you can practice both winter sports and summer hiking. The ski area of Civetta is very pleasant and renowned. For cross-country skiing there are more than 11 kilometres of perfectly snow-covered tracks. Two other small ski resorts are located 20 minutes drive from Alleghe further west: Falcade, connected to San Pellegrino, not far from Alpe de Luisa, and also part of the Dolomitisuperski package. This is a great way to vary the pleasures for skiers who spend several days in the area. The beauty of the lake makes Alleghe one of the most popular towns in the Dolomites for tourists.
