The village of Fenestrelle is known for its huge fortress, the largest in Europe, which overlooks it. The name Fenestrelle probably derives from the Latin finis terrae, as it represented the eastern border of the Cottian kingdom. The numerous military constructions present on the territory testify to the strategic importance of this village in the past. Near the hamlet of Les Chambons and the Chisone stream, there is an ancient wood of larch trees dating back some 1,300 years, planted at that time to protect the houses from avalanches. Hikes explore it as well as a forest road closed to cars.
