Officially known as Londonderry, Derry is Northern Ireland's2nd largest urban area, after Belfast. Like the capital, it has a long and turbulent history. Perched on a hilltop on the banks of the Foyle estuary, it is strategically located close to the sea. It is Ireland's only fully fortified city: its ramparts, built to defend against the first 17th-century settlers from England and Scotland, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
