Sligo may be the county's administrative center, but above all it's the home of Irish poet and playwright William Butler Yeats, who left his mark on the town and region. Few historic buildings remain here apart from the Abbey, but the town is a good base from which to explore the county. From O'Connell Street, where cafés and pubs are concentrated, you can reach Tobbergall Lane. At the end of Tobbergall Lane, you come to Rock Wood Parade, which runs along the banks of the Garavogue River. A 15-minute walk along the right-hand side brings you to Dooley Park. You can cycle around the wooded lake.
