Enniskillen's origins date back to prehistoric times. The island on which it sits was the main link between Ulster and the province of Connaught. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Maguire clan chiefs of Fermanagh. Today, the castle keep at Enniskillen has been converted into a museum. Shakespeare's contemporary, the poet Edmund Spencer, mentions Enniskillen's strategic importance. The town is also linked to Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett, who were educated at Portora Royal School. Finally, Enniskillen is renowned for its handmade lace and typically Irish woollen knitwear.
