Lough Erne is quite simply the most spectacular lake in Northern Ireland. It stretches for no less than 80 kilometers. It is shaped like an hourglass, and lends itself wonderfully to pleasure boat cruises. North of Enniskillen, Lower Lough Erne is 42 km long and almost reaches the Atlantic. When the wind blows, the waves are sometimes as powerful as those on the open sea. The lake is dotted with numerous small islands and peninsulas. The islands are home to Christian and pagan monuments, and three of them are worth discovering here: Devenish Island, White Island and Boa Island.
