Roscommon is a small, bustling market town named after St. Coman, abbot of Clonmacnoise, who founded a monastery of Augustinian canons in the 8th century. The county capital also has several interesting sites, such as the excellent County Museum, the remains of a 13th century abbey and the impressive Roscommon Castle, while its surroundings include two of the most important sites of interest in the country, namely the archaeological site of Rathcroghan and the National Famine Museum. As you can see, this is an ideal base for visiting the West of Ireland and the Midlands.
