If Calama received the visit of the conquistadors, Diego de Almagro and Pedro de Valdivia, the site, very little populated, hardly retained their attention. It is rather the ancient pre-Hispanic city of Chiu-Chiu that will serve as a base in the region. After subduing the Atacaméans, during a mass slaughter known as the History of the Heads, it is in this last village that they settle. The church of Chiu-Chiu, built in 1557, is the testimony of this early Spanish presence. The site of Calama will not know any development before a long time. The city, it should be specified, does not present any tourist interest: pass quickly your way.
