It was one of the last saltpeter works to be built (between 1922 and 1924). Its production capacity was 15,000 tons per month and 900 quintals per year of iodine, a derivative of saltpeter. The population was about 7,000, including 1,700 employees and workers, living on an area of 37 hectares. Despite the dismantling of the industrial area in 1940 and the damage inflicted by time on the sheds and machinery, Chacabuco retains a strong identity imbued with the great saltpeter gesture. Its most singular element is undoubtedly the great wall that surrounds it, very unusual in the Pampa Salitrera.
