On the way to Calama, you will arrive at the site of Pampá Unión. Created in 1912, the site emerged out of social necessity as a service center to take care of the needs of the neighboring camps. With almost 5,000 inhabitants, Pampá Unión had a school, a civil registry, a fire department, stores, bars and even brothels. It even published newspapers about life in the Pampas. While visiting the site, notice the advertisements on the walls promoting the merits of various products. In 1940, the iron installations of the saltpeter works were dismantled in order to satisfy the demand for iron caused by the Second World War.
