Chuquicamata is the largest copper mine ever exploited. Its dimensions are impressive: 4.5 km long, 3 km wide and nearly 1 km deep, a real tower of Babel in reverse, a sign that the greed of men makes them perform miracles. The view of the giant wound that men have made in the earth is impressive, as are the industrial installations: everything here is disproportionate. More than 8,000 employees work here and the workers are among the best paid and most protected in Chile: the price of copper has reached record highs, and the money that comes from it represents 50% of the resources of the Chilean tax authorities!
