Toconao is a charming village, an oasis of barely 800 inhabitants who, favored by a happy climate, devote themselves to the cultivation of fruit. The stone streets are lined with houses made of liparite which gives them their whitish colour. In a small square stands the church of San Lucas, built in the 1740's. Not far from the square, a few craftsmen knit sweaters, hats, and Andean gloves using cactus thorns according to the ancient tradition. The main activity of the village is mining, with agriculture coming in second place. But it is above all its Paradise Valley, the Quebrada de Jerez, that makes Toconao so endearing.
