This religious sanctuary, the main one in Norte Grande, rises 950 m above sea level, 72 km south-east of Iquique. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when the village flourished thanks to gold and silver mining. The town has been declared a typical area by the Council of National Monuments and is the epicentre of Chile's main religious festival, the Tirana. The latter honours the Virgen del Carmen and brings together brotherhoods from all over the country. Although the current population does not exceed 250 inhabitants, this religious festival attracts more than 200,000 people every year in July
