At an altitude of 4,300 km, it's the largest geyser site in the Southern Hemisphere, and not to be missed. Go early, around 4 a.m., to watch the geysers wake up, spitting out a salute to the sun and competing for heat. By the time you get there after 8 a.m., the fumes have dissipated a little, but the crowds have disappeared too, leaving the magic to work once more. This is a geothermal field created by the El Tatio volcano, where violent jets of steam erupt in the morning. This is due to contact between the frozen underground river and volcanic magma. In fact, we're standing on a fragile earth as thin as an eggshell: underneath, the world is rumbling!
