Situated 3 km northwest of San Pedro, in a valley irrigated by the San Pedro and Grande rivers, the fortress takes its name from the cultivated fields of the Ayllo de Quitor, which grow at its foot. Quitor, like other fortresses in the region, was built in the 12th century to curb the expansionist ambitions of its Aymara neighbors. It is defended to the north by a vertical farellón overlooking the fertile plain of the Río Grande, to the west by a deep fracture, to the south by a ravine crowned by a wall and to the east by a thick wall. Of all the Atacaméan pukaras, this fortress is one of the best strategically located.
