Visoko/Високо has a population of about 11,000, of which 92% are Bosniaks. It is the capital of the municipality of Visoko (39,000 inhabitants), within the Zenica-Doboj canton. The city is 33 km northwest of Sarajevo and 41 km southeast of Zenica. There are frequent bus and train connections to Sarajevo and Zenica (bus and train stations in the city center, on the right bank of the Bosna River).Visoko has a central place in the history of the country. In the Neolithic period it was one of the most important settlements in Europe. It later became a stronghold of the Illyrians and the first capital of the Kingdom of Bosnia, where Tvrtko I was crowned in 1377.
