This is one of the most beautiful fortified sites in Portugal. It was established on this promontory by the Portuguese, to keep an eye on the Moors on the one hand, and the Castilians on the other. Today, it overlooks the Alqueva reservoir. The word Monsaraz is derived from the Arabic saris , which refers to the cistus ladanifera, a shrub with fragrant white flowers that thrives in the warmth of the Alentejo. In July, Monsaraz hosts a charming classical music festival. The surrounding hills are covered with olive groves and vineyards: Reguengos de Monsaraz is one of Alentejo's most important wine-producing centers.
